I watched Lain and right when I finished I realized I had no idea what happened. That was 8 years ago, so now I remember nothing. I never finished Haibane Renmei, it was good but slow. Then again I was like 16 or 17, now at 24 I might enjoy it more.

I'm ok with depressing stuff if it's done well and not depressing for the sake of being depressing (Evangelion being the exception). For example, Grave of the Fire Flies is one of the most depressing films of all time but it has a beautiful message.

It's like if you took the beautiful art style of Lain and gave it the plot of angel beats.

And then sucked most of the light heartedness out of them

I like it.

Lain was very different in how slow it was. The fact that almost no music was used also contributed to it's slow and surrealist tone.
